I did say "or the filter has broken". You need to buy a KL145 filter, it's all metal, and the one Guzzi should have used in the first place. There is a UFI equivalent all metal. 3176000. When I asked Mahle customer services about the regular failures of the KL150 filter they told me that it was not designed to work immersed in petrol, it was a diesel filter and petrol would attack the adhesive holding the plastic into the metal. The worrying bit is that had it failed when you were in lane 3 of a motorway, you would have come to a stop.

Thanks Brian. Got to admit I missed that bit. Font of knowledge as always. I have just ordered a 145 as per your suggestion. It got me baffled for a bit after expecting a split or disconnected pipe then noticed petrol dribbling out from the joint then noticed the distortion on the plastic bit. Glad it packed up when parked and not running. Like you say it could have been a lot worse.
Thanks again.

You prompted me to add a warning in several sections. Should have done it years ago. Though the problem has been covered a few times.

Ah right got it now, was a bit confused there, so its KL 150 that'll cause the problems and KL 145 that is the all metal fix ? You'd think that Guzzi would have done a recall on that one wouldn't you. A bit of a disgrace really.

The disgrace is that they were still fitting them for almost 10 years. Must have been a couple of cents cheaper.

Guzzi are bad for this.. on the Centauro/Daytona the oil pipes from the cooler used to split and dump a sump of oil under the bike onto the back tyre! USA had a recall but it never happened in Europe. I tried to pursue this with Guzzi but they flatly denied that there was a problem. in the end I just bought new pipes. Guzzi are not the only ones I wont start on my experiences with KTM.

Happens in the car world too. Complete denial by some manufacturers of very common faults which should never have happened. Like the oil bath cam belt on the PSA Puretech engines, cam belt starts to break up with oil contamination, and bits seal up the oil pump intake strainer with the obvious result.
