At the risk of causing trouble, I thought I would share my confusion.
Ok - handbook says use 10W60 engine oil to API SG Spec.
No problem with that. I was under the impression that as API specs were improved over the years, each 'upgrade' to SH, SJ, SL, etc superseded the previous one so that the newer spec was considered superior to the previous one.
Actually, obtaining SG spec is quite difficult now especially in viscosity 10w60.
So, I thought I was on to a good thing when I found 5 litres of synthetic REKTOL 10W60 HP oil, API SL, at a reasonable price.
I bought it, but just to be sure it was pretty much the best quality for the Norge, I sent an email to the manufacturer in Germany to ask.
I was very surprised when the reply was -

''Moto Guzzi gives the instruction to use a motor oil API SG, SAE 10W-60. Our product 10W-60 meets the specification API SL.That's why our oil is not right. Unfortunately, we are not experts for Moto Guzzi Norge. We can only rely on the specifications.''

So I looked into API Specs a bit further - apparently SG spec contains a lot more zinc & phosphorous than API SL,  over twice as much as the current API SM, and as this is for anti wearing properties may be more important than I previously understood.
So does this mean that Moto Guzzi are being very specific about the requirement for API SG Spec oil, and we should not be using anything with a newer ( and more widely available API Spec ).

More likely they haven't updated the information since it was written for the earlier Norge in 2006.
But ask Piaggio customer services, they should know. (I bet they don't though).

For the V7.ii (2015) the Owners Manual helpfully (not!) says "use high quality 10W-60 oil" however the Service Manual specifies "ENI i-RIDE PG 10W-60" specification "JASO MA, MA2 - API SG"
I imagine it's the same stuff as the Norge.

Slightly odd because JASO MA/MA2 is needed for a wet clutch, and we have a dry one.

The API code is a separate part of the spec, the formulation. The link below tells us the SG is obsolete and, "Not suitable for use in most gasoline-powered automotive engines built after 1993. May not provide adequate protection against build-up of engine sludge, oxidation, or wear."

However it goes on, "For automotive gasoline engines, the latest API Service Category includes the performance properties of each earlier category and can be used to service older engines where earlier category oils were recommended."
We are up to API SN now for 2010 or later engines.

I'm a bit baffled.
Has MG provided a minimum spec for the oil?

I think the owners' manual has it about right. Any high quality 10W60 synthetic oil. API SG or above.

Every manufacturer has it's own tame oil supplier and will always promote that name.

Not worth agonising over.

I've read that info too, Jefrs.
I wouldn't have agonised over Oil specs years ago because the choice was pretty simple, but Manufacturers of modern engines are nowadays very specific about oil types, with dire warnings if you don't follow the recommendation, so that is why I have tried to find out the facts.

It seems in many cases not even dealers put the recommended viscosity in, let alone the recommended spec. It just leaves me scratching my head.

If you know a dealer is not using the correct viscosity you should complain and refuse to pay rather than scratch your head. You should also report the fact to Guzzi customer services as their action will void your warranty.

Too many people associated with Guzzi still live in the dark ages, "we always used 20/50 so it must be ok now".
