A question for the learned assembly.

Topped up the battery today but eyes being not what they were a bit too much water went in so I tried to soak some out with a sheet of toilet paper. Unfortunately at that very moment the good lady decided she needed some assistance with a stubborn jar/lid interface. Swift return to the battery only to find not all of the paper would come out. I did manage to fish some out with a bent paper clip but some got away. My question is; is this an ex battery or will it plod on for some while yet before exploding in a shower of plates, plastic and acid?Ouch

I thank you.

What type of battery? Must be a normal flooded cell lead acid.
Is your concern just that there is some paper in there?
Provided there is adequate electrolyte, shouldn't be a problem.

Lead acid and the problem was too much electrolyte! Years I've been filling batteries so it must have been my turn to screw this one up.Cry

Have you got a small syringe? Though don't take too much out, you put distilled water in, but when you take it out you take out some of the acid so you dilute it.

The worst that will happen is it will overflow when the battery is fully charged, as the plates tend to swell on charging. Worse of course if it's overcharged, but I doubt you would do that.

Well worth buying a "Basting" syringe for this job I have 1 for battery top ups another for Brake fluid yet another for oils, handy to fill fork lube and to get to stuff like gear linkage the engine bolts and such very useful items in the shed.

I actually have a hydrometer knocking about in the garage somewhere which is useful not only for checking SG but also in your situation. Mind you, it's one of those things that I haven't seen since we moved house.....

Found a 20mm syringe and used the pipe from the squeezy water bottle to suck up the excess. Life is so much better when there are sensible people around to talk to! Thanks all.Thumbs Up
