I just stick religiously to urban speed limits. I use discretion on the “political” 50s round here and on nationals. I know of two roads where I can test that my bikes still do the ton, given the right circumstances. If I’m going to get done I’d prefer it to be as a result of enjoying myself rather than sloppy riding in a 30 limit….
Anyone remember “The Mad Mullah”, erstwhile Chief Constable of North Wales? Under his regime you got prosecuted at 31 in a 30 limit….

Glad you got there.

Sounds like a website with limited capacity. I have the same when doing my expenses, forget it on a Friday when half of Germany are trying to upload their receipts. It does of course make you suspect they don't want to pay out or they'd get a better website.

I think Bennetts were about the first in-sewer-ants I fell out with once I got past the stage of being grateful to any that would quote. They wanted money to cancel. That's me giving them additional cash to have 2 months less cover. In the days before such things could easily be traced I just swapped the bike anyway and let the policy expire of natural causes.

I really cannot believe that a 1mph decrease could result in the figures quoted. It's virtually impossible to see a difference of that magnitude on the average car or bike speedo.

I always use the 10% rule. Pleased I don't live in London. In County Durham there are no Fixed speed cameras!
I'll get their soon

Just about every vehicle I have driven and ridden over the years the speedos under read by 8%-10% THE only exception was when I had my 100mm V1000 re calibrated by a specialist he set it to 5% tolerance, which to be fair on the road is very close

That surprises me as I'm sure all the bikes I've ever owned have speedo's that over read. When compared with the reading on my TomTom sat' nav' (Are they accurate?) the Bullet speedo' is wildly optimistic, the Loops not so much but still a little flattering.

It is my understanding that for several decades now the old +/- 10% speedo accuracy was replaced by their being allowed to read up to 10% fast, but not slow. All of my many bikes since satnav have read fast, my C5 RE Classic ludicrously so. The 10%+2 ACPO (superseded some years ago now by the National Police Chiefs' Council) was presumably based on this permitted margin, plus a little extra. It has always been discretionary - one can be prosecuted for 1mph over the posted limit, irrespective of the discretionary allowance. I remember a former Chief Constable of North Wales was particularly obsessive about speeding. The fact that under UK a 10% speedo accuracy is permitted does not of course mean that they are all calibrated so inaccurately. The rule was introduced in the days of cable-driven speedos; modern electronic ones should be a lot more accurate.

Coincidental to this thread, my daughter, the most careful, inoffensive driver imaginable has just be clobbered for speeding in Somerset. New speed limit reduced from 40mph to 30 mph and she was caught in her Ford Bland by a policeman with a hand held speed gun doing 30mph. £100 fine and 3 points or go on the course to save the points. I am shocked that they would do her for the 3extra mph.

My wife got done in Bristol a little while back for a few mph over.. She too is the most careful law abiding driver, it really should be me who gets caught..
She went on the course which is marginally cheaper and saves the points.

She got caught in a friend's road while going to visit her. To show how sneaky they are her friend had been caught twice (again only a couple of mph over) in her own road... She's a JP and now is paranoid about getting caught again.
Just a revenue raising scam really though, around here at least..

Cheers,
Adrian

I'm sorry but I've no sympathy for the JP on two levels (1) Being caught twice in the same road - surely one would learn from one's own mistakes, or better still those of others (2) As a JP residing and handing down punishment for others' misdemeanours - a degree of hypocrisy here IMHO. Really the answer is simple - stick rigidly to the urban limits and speed only in the Nationals you know well ie where there are no known cameras, side turnings etc. I know it's a PITA but not as much as getting caught....
