I'm trying to remove the forks on my V7 and have come to a stop with this .I've removed the Allen bolt
however and the sliders appear to drop . I'm not sure if this bolt unscrews from the stanchions .It looks like its screws in to the top yolk .The manual mentions a puller to remove the yolk on the pivot bolt. Is that all that is required to remove the yolk top plate ?

Would it be fair to assume that your V7 Cali' is a late disc brake variant? That has different forks to the drum braked majority, I've never touched those forks so I don't know the answer but I'll be interested to find out.

Here is the parts list for what I believe you have.It looks as if the top nut screws into the stanchion in the usual manner so to remove the forks it shouldn't be necessary to remove the top yoke. What did you remove from the top of the fork so far, was it a large hexagon nut? The Allen bolt you've removed is the damper securing bolt(item 4) in the diagram. The fork tubes are a tapered fit into the top plate. It sometimes takes quite a bit of force to separate them. Thread the 36 mm hex top bolt back in without the washer under it. Leave about 1/8" gap. I then place as large of a hammer as I can fit, on the underside of the top plate while striking the top bolt with another hammer (dead blow or copper). If you're just removing the sliders to install new seals, dampers or springs, then it really isn't necessary to go any farther. The slider with spring/damper units will slide down and off now.

So now we know that removal is just the same for disc forks as it is for the more common drum forks. I thought it might be but couldn't be sure.

As for the weight, an early American road test compared the solidity of the machine with that of a Sherman tank.
