ok, been at this for hours, getting fork off etc was no prob, getting old seal out was a nightmare. i had to cut it out a tiny bit at a time, almost as if it was welded onto the fork tube.
now out and all clean but the new seal appears to be too big by 2mm. tube is 56 dia at top, broadening out lower down and seal is 58. there is no flex in the seal so how do i get it over the lip of the tube? tried lubing everything but dont want to take a hammer to it as i dont see that helping

You'll never make up 2mm with heat and cold. If those are the correct measurements, it seems you have the wrong seal. But what do you mean by 56mm ID(?) at the top, broadening out. Does the bore get bigger further down?

Its 56mm at top and there is a recess belie the top lip that the seal fits, I think. It certainly is wider below the lip.
I did think 2mm was a eide gap to close. I will send the seals back to Gbits and get them to check them

I just replaced both mine on my Guzzi Stelvio. Highly recommend to watch this video on You Tube - Delboys Garage: Delboy's Garage, USD Fork Seal Replacement - YouTube
Also , it's critically important to purchase the right sized seal installation tool. The reason is that it acts like a slide hammer to re-install the new seal into the fork tube and without this, it's very, very easy to critically damage the new seal as it goes in, thus you`ll quickly be leaking again. Good luck with your seal replacement, if you hot any snags, email me and i`ll try to help. Tom

Under a bright light I spotted a collar on the tip of the leg narrowing the gap on top. Levered it off and seal fits so what is the collar about ? It diesnt show on any of the parts diagrams and isn't part of the dust cover ?

News to me but does explain the difficulty in fitting the seal, and of course, removing the old one. Certainly not shown in any of the parts diagrams.

think it must have been part of the skeleton of the dust cover which had to be forced off the leg as well.
everything clean and seal and cover all fitted. trying to get top onto leg, no amount of strength will force it down far enough to let me even try to screw the cap on. i am reasonably fit and weigh 15stone but cannot compress it enough - tips ? this is the preload and pumping shaft, this is the only order i can fit it - am i correct ? what purpose does the small spring serve, clearly the shaft doesnt compress, the big spring sits on top of the white end Edited by Jim Mac - 05 Jul 2021 at 16:27 |
