I used Hammerite smooth silver on my gearbox and although brighter than I would have liked the finish was good, however a subsequent fuel leak from a carb and the paint was eaten away on contact. I always thought Hammerite was petrol proof seemingly not

No I made the mistake of painting a fuel tank with Hammerite, it was great until it got some splashes and ended up with horrible pitted areas. You can buy fuel resistant lacquer but i dont think it would work on Hammerite. The original Hammerite was fuel, acid and just about everything proof, only problem was corrosion could work away behind it and you wouldnt know till it was too late.

So I hear, I didn't find any stock earlier in the summer, so I used Frosts. They say that etch primer is a good idea but that it "crackles" less with it. I painted the Cali engine cases outside on one of the Hot days this year and it "crackled" well even with etch primer. Surface temperature of the engine block in the sun was near 50 degrees!! which I am sure helped.
