Actually the disconnected wire is from the condenser. The other lead goes to the coil, its confirmed.
I will order new HT cables today but unsurprisingly GutsiBits don't have any in stock.
Thanks

You can get copper  core HT cable from most motor parts shops including Halfords.

HURRAY
After.. cleaning the carbs, rewiring the NEG to coil, re setting timing, and points gap, adjusting the valves.. NOTHING.. still the same result..
THEN...
I connected an extra condenser to the equation (just to see if the other was faulty) and... Big smileBHAM!!
the bike starts nicely.
I am still waiting for Gutsibits to send me a replacement condenser but in the meantime I bought a different condenser (as suggested by Mike H earlier on) and a set of new spark plugs.
I will try to source these HT leads and caps elsewhere.

... It was the condenser all along.Angry

Thanks

Good news indeed, and you were right all along too; though the leaking HT lead would have been a problem had you not discovered it. Tenacity pays off.

I usually go to Vehicle Wiring Products for wire and such - did the Ural with their's and NGK caps.

NICE.
I just came back from a very pleasant ride, (the smoothest I can remember for a while)
Brand-new plugs and condenser.. (if this fails I have a back up plan)
Still need to replace the cap and wire on Cyl 2 but it has been lovely so far

Thanks a million to all of you for your contributions.

sh*tty condenser give you sh*tty times
I was on my way back from work when I started to have the hyccup again.
I soon realized that the wire (+) had come off the condenser.
Luckily I had some cello tape and was able (after toooo many attempts) to get back home.
This morning I fitted the red little box and it seems to have sorted the issue. Hopefully it will last longer than the 2 previous ones (from Gutsibits).
I have also made a spare one to take with me in my tool box.
Still I am very disappointed with the "quality" of these products.
Until next time..
Thanks

Is there anything holding the Wima condenser apart from the two leads ? If not I suspect that a fractured wire may be in the offing.

I would certainly support the condenser and the wires close to it. Otherwise vibration could cause the wires to break.
