Hi lads . Ordered 80w-90 oil to do gearbox and shaft drive oil change. They recommend putting hpls transmission treatment +stop leak into the shaft oil change? How do I use this stuff?

Normall add a drop to the oil, though never heard anyone suggest using stop leak.

Who is 'they'?
The hpls additive includes the 'stop leak' but I'd be wary of additives not recommended by Guzzi. They only recommend a small amount of moly in the bevel box.

And it's questionable whether modern oils need moly too.

No, just pointing out there is probably no need to agonise over exactly which additive to use and how much.

It's an unknown. Will it change the viscosity curve? Does it make fileings clump together? Is it hydroscopic? Given its probably just synthetic egg white, chances are it's going to be gone in minutes. A lot of these "squirt of Redex Sir?" type products are just harmless rubbish that makes another couple of quid for the supplier and gives the buyer a warm feeling that he did his best for his favourite toy. First question to ask is which fleets use it and what data they produced to show it saved them money. When Stobarts and Enterprise don't put PTFE in gearboxes or mesh cages full of fishing weights in fuel tanks you know it's snake oil. Most Guzzi's I've known also use a 140 grade in the bevel box and either 80/90 or 140 in the gearbox? Andy

Agree that most modern oils don’t need additives unlike when early Guzzis (70s 80s and 90s) had it as a recommendation.
I would be interested to know if modern Guzzis have the same recommendation CHRIS

The 850 V7 manual specifically says not to.
Official manuals are of course written by purveyors of oil without additives and replacement gearboxes, so we'll see when a couple of dozen people have put 100000 miles on theirs.

Oils have improved over the years. Example, Peugeot manual gearboxes are sealed for life, and generally they last well over that 100,000 miles benchmark. One I had, had done well over 300,000 and still worked perfectly. The Guzzi manuals which specify Moly were written long ago.

And remember that older manual makes no mention of the dangers of Ethanol in fuel.
