I guessed this sentence would become reality at some stage although i'm not sure whether it's lack of grease or just plain lack of maintenance. I'm almost too embarassed to post the photos ... I've owned older bikes in the past but nothing prepared me for how bad the bearings on my '04 Breva would be. I had pencilled in Bearing replacement /inspection after a test ride but amazingly it was only in wet slippery conditions that the handling was a bit iffy , having said that i'm still assuming that this will cure the "handling problems " I've ended up having to seek professional help for the first time in 20 yrs , 2 stainless 8mm screws for the front mudguard l/h fork slider just don't want to part company I'm really looking forward now to inspecting the swing arm bearings. Oh, and the front wheel bearings are a tad rough too photos are the lower race the top one had grease.. |

Those have been too tight for some time. Maybe a previous owner thought that would replace a steering damper.
But if the wheel bearing is rough too, suspect a pressure washer has been used.

Stainless screws in cast aluminium in areas like the forks where road salt can get to both ends of the bolt generally isn’t a good idea - the two dissimilar metals form effectively a little battery and corrode each other. Zinc plated all the way!

a few weeks back I changed head bearings on my GSXR1100 I only noticed a slight pull to the right sometimes because over time I had not noticed a decline . After changing head bearings the difference was amazing I now got pin point accuracy and the bike now flows around the bends .Enjoy once your head bearings are renewed . Head bearings only need the slack taken out of them , I do around 300 miles then recheck when bedded in .

I reassembled over the weekend , and it's beginning to feel like a half decent bike now , although it now has violent head shake in the hand off the bars test when slowing down( it was perceptible before with the overtight bearings) .... generally on non Guzzi bikes , tyre changes have sorted this for me in the past or is it a Guzzi trait which might explain the overtight brgs? Another query , The bolts for the top yoke could do with replacing but I can't see them listed in any online parts list. ( only the lower ones) |

No it's not a Guzzi trait.

Finally sorted my head shake with a new front tyre , on close inspection the front bearings were ok but as I had some and the wheel was off I replaced them as a precaution.
No head shake now at any speed, slowing down or accelerating, and generally the bike just feels way better than it has since I first got it. Thanks for all the suggestions. |
