    Posted: 14 Dec 2018 at 12:18
Since I bought my V7 Sport 18 months ago I've been plagued with the "click no crank" issue.  It has a regular Bosch starter motor with solenoid - I suppose the lightweight pre solenoid starter was junked years ago.
Anyway, I bought a new relay and rewired it in the recommended way to avoid the high current going through the ignition switch.  Also new battery straps and cleaned all earths.  Seemed to be a bit better for a time, but more recently has got much worse.  New battery fitted last week (old lead / acid was 5 years old), no improvement.
I was ready to buy a new Valeo starter (ca £200), but I found a local guy in Gloucester - The Starter Bay - who is a specialist, but does not generally work on bike starter motors.  He agreed to have a look at it, so I dropped it off at 11.00 yesterday morning.  Half an hour later he called me to say it was in pretty ropey condition and would need new brushes, new armature bushes and the armature machining.  Also the solenoid was beyond repair and it would need a new one.  Did I want to go ahead?  How much?  £70.  Yes please.
At 14.30 he called me to say it was finished.
By late afternoon it was back on the bike and spinning up the engine about three times as fast as before.  Also guaranteed for 6 months.
Proper service which I can recommend.

The one thing about the starter motors on Guzzis, they are essentially the same as car ones. Thus they can easily be refurbished by many specialists.

To be honest Barry, I think the right services are everywhere, you just need need to network and look around.  Anyway, this guy's a good un.  Never heard a Guzzi starter motor spin up up so quick.

£70 must be about 30 minute's labour in most places. Good find I'd say.

Any Bosch service shop can do a refurb of the Bosch or valeo starters they are the same as car/van ones, more powerful than most car ones ...

I'm off to see Ian at the Starter Bay on Friday.  Thanks for the recommendation.

A mate of mine has a BMW, the starter motor is a bit weary, so he asked his mechanic about it and the chap said you can get a heavy duty one made by a different company and used on dumper trucks
looks the same as a valeo but made by nippondenso or some one
they fit lots of them
if its used by construction workers it has to be well made

Nippondenso do make starters, but whether they make one which would fit a Guzzi is another matter.

Just got back from The Starter Bay, great service. New brushes, bushes, solenoid, brush springs, machined armature (basically fully rebuilt) for £75, fast turnaround too was finished in around 2 hours.

Not so good is that Xmas commitments mean I cannot put it back on the bike today.

Great service eh Jalfrezi!  How long did it take you to find his unit?
