Is it simply a case of removing the valve cover to view the position of the inlet and exhaust valves.

With the plugs out stick your thumb over the plug hole of the side you want to check. An airtight seal is good. On the compression stroke you will feel the piston trying to blow your thumb away, rather than the air going out the exhaust port.
On my LM you can here the carb sucking air in prior to the compression stroke as well.

If you have the cam cover off,  ( I generally do valve clearances at the same time as timing), both pushrods should be slightly loose as well at TDC of the compression stroke, whereas on the exhaust stroke the exhaust pushrod will be tight.
