Morning all, well my plans to buy a new chrome rack and have it painted have hit a snag, phoned Gutsibits yesterday and told no longer availablešŸ˜¢ so what to do next?.
Have decided to try and make up the basic shape fromcopper pipe and give the completed "pattern" to a local fabricator to make in mild steel.
Could some kind person measure the original for me please especially the spacing of the cross rail/ tubes

Thanks Chris

As a (retired) fabricator in mild steel, I would prefer a drawing with dimensions, to a copper model.
An important element in the information you wish to convey, is the nature of the joints, and steel is joined in a different way to copper.
You have a choice between tube, which would require gas or MIG welding, or something like 8mm round bar, with perhaps a drilled flat strip surround, which could be "stick welded."
I'd prefer the latter, slightly heavier, but much stronger.
A good fabricator will advise you.

I realised this sort of thing was not generally understood when the National Trust asked me to replicate a wooden bench in mild steel!

Tube would be better as it is lighter, but as you say round bar is stronger. I made stainless steel 750S pilion grab bars out of solid bar as I couldn't bend the correct diameter tube to the tight radii required. They are a lot hevier, still it is a heavy bike! Ermm

Thanks for the input, have scrapped the copper pipe idea and found a decent picture of a rack and added the dimensions from the frame.
Will drop it in monday morning and see what he thinks
thanks again, Chris

All depends on the relative diameters.

But the actual design matters more than anything else.

I remember the rack I bought for the V50 broke twice, and I never loaded it up. It was the design. Couple of extra braces and it lived again for years.

I have some relevant scar tissue  here,
In 2010 I made a trailer, loaded my blacksmithing equipment aboard, and drove to Andalusia, to wow them with my fancy ironwork.
The only commission I got was to make a set of panniers for a friend's mule,  so he could bring river stones up to his building site.
I designed them for him, he agreed to pay me in marijuana, (he was broke) and we went to buy the steel.
But first we tried the marijuana.
The steel supplier convinced him tube would be better -- that was his medium.
I was pressured into changing my design, and with an electric welder, make it out of thin steel tube.
Which was a complete nightmare.
I had to weld the tube onto round bar reinforcement at each joint and corner -- it was a nightmare.
But it is still in use 9 years later.
I would avoid tube if I were you, unless the wall thickness will allow electric welding.
An 8mm steel rod, welded into a hole in a flat bar surround, will not let you down.

But everything depends on who you ask to accomplish the task.
Hope that helps.

So what rack is it that you wanted in the first place? A link or photo would help.

Hi, yes it is but with postal and import charges ends  up costing well in excess of $200, have given the image to a local steel fabricator along with dimensions will see how much it comes out at.
Regards Chris
