Yes you will have to remove the nut and the helical gear (yours may be a different number of teeth) then the casing is drawn off this shaft, leaving you with my original picture of the clusters etc.

Hi Chris
Im convinced that the 22mm nut and gear has to come off, getting a bit paranoid about this gearbox, the end of the shaft seems to have some damage so getting the nut off is going to be a problem, is the thread right or left hand ?
This job is hear to test me I feel !!

All Moto Guzzis are here to test us especially the ones that are getting on for 40 years oldWink
As I said the helical 23T gear has to come off but the thread is a normal one, in fact there are no left hand threads in the gearbox.
Yes there are dowels and yes this final casing is always a `bugger` to get off thanks to the said dowels.
A bit worrying when you say the shaft has damage
I have sent you a PM with my phone number if you want to speak to me, sometimes a bit clearer when talking, also if it`s iphone then instant pictures can be sent

Hi Chris
Feel a bit of a fool, obvious the 22mm nut/23gear has to be removed, done this and casting now off and spring re-located on eccentric bolt.
Just 2 more questions please :
When do you know when this bolt needs to used and which way to turn, left or right ?
The clutch actuation rod fell out before I could remove it, which way round to fit back , one end is a smaller dia.
Really grateful for your help on this one, hope the box works when back together.
Marc.

Thin end of clutch rod is engine end
The concentric adds bias to either the up or down shifts thus for instance if neutrals keep appearing on the up shift, for example, then by adjusting the concentric the selector adds more’ spring load’ to that part of the gear change
You will have already realised that the concentric only has 180 degrees of active movement hence my advice to mark the end of it
