I've never really thought much of the V7 (engine size approaching a big block yet less power than a V50) but that has the rugged charm of a well used bike.

Have to agree... I have looked often at a newish V7 but at the end of the day I have to agree with Stephen. Also add the extra weight & all the electronic gizmos, Euro99 stuff... Must get restarted on my V50III project... Cheers, Adrian Bristol UK

Ah, the same approach my 3 year old niece has to brown cake. It isn't orange or pink so must be bad. Top Trumps stuff is pointless, V7's are just fun to ride. Currently on the ferry on the way to the Elefant rally on my C125, but I guess that's just a scooter with fewer CC's than a Vespa! Andy

Similar BHP to the V50 (if the V50 is a good one I would think) but a lot more mid range torque. I never felt my V7 lacked power but then it's not a sports bike and the torque curve suited my riding style.

Washed the 1971 V7 Special as it was doing an impression of the Torrey Canyon whilst I was out riding it yesterday. I think the rear crank seal has blown,it could be 53 years old, who knows. Oil all over the place including on the rear tyre. No oil registering on the dip stick. Now that it's clean further investigation will ensue. It's a good job the 850GT is behaving impeccably otherwise I'd have to walk.

I changed handlebars from 'lean back Florida' style to more conventional style & went for a long ride. Despite now having about 6 inch too much cables/wiring/brake pipe stuffed under the headlamp, and despite even more folded knees (I haven't even tried the highway pegs from the new sitting position), it's much more 'natural' for local roads !....weirdly the same windscreen seems even more effective on the lower bars ?

Back in the garage this morning, as I had put the clock support brackets on upside down so the clocks were too high, top yoke off swapped the clock brackets and put some spacers above them (I knew I had made these for something but as it is over 20 years since I took the bike apart…) more chunky O rings over the spacers and put it all back together. I have been comparing with old photos and it looks about right now, my only worry is my back that was 20 years younger last time I rode the beast, the bars look very low. But I’m not planning any long trips on her, I have the Stelvio for that! No need to rush, the bike has been in boxes for ages. I managed to shear the crank, (ex girlfriend put sugar in the tank, now it has a locking filler!) Powder coated frame (satin black so as not to be too lairy) tank and side panels repainted, Clocks refurbished by Speedy Cables, seat recovered as well as a V7 dual seat, Baldrick rebuilt the engine about 2 years ago, wheels are re-laced, new discs for the front and new brake pads for the rear, new horns, the list goes on… I need to keep up the momentum now that I have started again |

I failed to start the LeMans :(
I’d have had more time to faff around, but a pal came enquiring after my health, so we chewed the fat for much of the morning. It’s on charge…

Went for a 100 mile run with the VMCC yesterday on my V50. Proved to myself that the electrical faults have gone after dismantling and cleaning the ignition switch internal contacts and renewed a broken Molex female pin in a 12 way connector. There must have been quite a voltage drop before so I might have better lights as this was the main feed to everything.
