I really like the look of this bike - except for the "oops where does this go" oil cooler that sticks out of the bottom of the engine! I see that Ghezzi Brian and Mototech sell kits to lift it higher up the frame.

Has anyone done this and can they advise if the fuel pump needed to be relocated? If so, where did they move it to?

Thanks

John at Motonero is currently doing some upgrades on my bike over the autumn / winter  and he seems to remember talking to Amadeo at Raceco 15+ years ago and him saying that a oil cooler wasn't even necessary on a Guzzi unless it made 95bhp + - not sure whether he was referring to a crank or rear wheel figure though?

Anybody taken theirs off?

The latest range of Guzzis do run hot, due to the lean mixture, cats and emissions regs, so they do need oil coolers.

All the earlier big block engines run a lot cooler, so I suspect he is right unless you are planning heat wave.

You can get screw in thermometers to replace the dip stick, so you could always try for yourself with the added ability to check the oil temperature.

I have noticed that if I am stuck in hideous traffic for quite some time (e.g. Bank holiday traffic) my Sporti gets very hot and starts mis-firing but returns to normal once cooled down or moving at normal speed - do you think this indicates that I should keep the radiator?

Well it depends on how hot the oil is getting. The engine is air cooled, so a hot engine when stuck in traffic may not mean overheated oil.

There is only one way to know and that's to measure the oil temperature when the engine is in this hot condition.

Harleys have simple oil thermostats in the bungs on the oil tank for big twins.
Maybe you can modify one - I think you will be surprised how hot the oil gets, and it does help to keep the engine cool - even if it is an air cooled motor.

Thanks Brian, this has got to be worth buying.

I have received some images back from Bruno at Ghezzi Brian - it looks like he has used a smaller oil cooler to accommodate the relocation.

Cheers

How much do you want to spend ? You could replace the existing sump with a deeper V sump which gives increased capacity and does away with the oil cooler . The plus side , you get an external filter on the front . The minus side : you can't bike the bike up kerbs !!

I have just remembered seeing something about oil being sprayed onto the lower ends of the cylinders using special 'Jets' on some of the 'newer' Guzzis ~ in other words the oil is also being used as a coolant hence the inclusion of the oil cooler. The need is also synonymous with engine size, e.g. the 850 Griso doesn't have a cooler but the 1200 does.

The new models run much hotter anyway due to emissions control.

The 8 valve engines are oil cooled. They have a double oil pump and special oil cooling galleries in the head.
