From Wikipedia, ........
"From 1954 to 1981, there was no accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats."
Older Guzzi's only had 5 digits in the frame number.  Modern bikes have a lot more.  That is probably the difference.

Would Mike Lacey be able to help? This is a question for others here in the UK.
Mike Lacey does a machine dating service for the British Moto Guzzi club. He might have records for this.

It may be that the National MG club in the US might have an equivalent service.
Brian.

I know the dating letters are free if you're a club member, don't know about if you're not a member, though in my opinion worth joing the club just for the dating letters, if nothing else, if you're messing around with old Guzzis. Otherwise contact Guzzi/Piaggio in Italy direct here for a comprehensive dating procedure and hope for the best! Tongue: https://service.piaggiogroup.com/Vintage/richdetail.asp?L=EN&B=Guzzi

Edit: Look here on the MGCUK page, says you can email Mike for a dating letter but non members are charged: http://www.motoguzziclub.co.uk/node/85

Just not sure Mike would be able to help with an American model. But worth an email to ask. Charge was £15 or £20, which these days is not much more in $$.

Don't see that makes any odds Brian, they were all made in the same production run and within the same range of frame numbers.

it's £20  to non members, but free to members, but interestingly it's only £10 to join between now and the end of the year.

Nice looking Stornello.  Yes that is a Sport America.  Somebody has probably changed the bars in the past 50 years.  This pic is from the owners handook.
