Though the price of crude oil has been falling for some time the retail price seems to be rising (this is just my impression,I have no figures.)So whilst looking to find a 20/50 with a high ZDDP content for my old loops I was pleased to find that Classic Oils of Aylesbury have introduced a new self branded range of lubricants."Heritage 20/50" with 1300 ppm ZDDP.That's a much higher zinc content than most,and..at £16.95 for five litres seems to be a bargain.
I think I'll be giving that a go. |

Does sound good. I last paid £10 for 4.5 litres of Comma 20/50 that I use in the Lodola/Stornello but then have to pay £5 carriage. This place is just up the road from me so worth seeing of I can collect, and it can't be any better/worse than Comma.

I've got 5 litres of Millers Trident 20W50 which anyone can have. Can't find a reference to the ZDDP content though.

According to one source I've come across Brian, that oil of yours has a ZDDP content of 1760 ppm.If that's true it should be good for old Guzzi's or anything else with flat tappets.

After enquiring with Millers Bryan I've found that your Trident oil contains 1091 ppm of ZDDP.Quite good by today's standards.I know I'm being choosey but I lie awake at night worrying about me lobes and followers.
Don't we all????? |

I've just bought some Morris 20W-50 V-Twin oil. How do I find the ZDDP level of that? They do 2 versions, one is synthetic I think. I bought the cheaper one.

Evenin' Ian. On the Millers web site they have a query box you can type your er' query into. They answered me within 24 hours.Don't know if Morris have the same or perhaps a customer services phone number.
I wish they would all just print it in the can.It has become a concern for most "Classic Vehicles" from Austin Sevens to Zenith Wassitsnames. |

Cheers Dave. I've only put it in the loop so far, but the Spada is due an oil change soon.
I used to use Mobil 1 0W-50 full synthetic but they seem to have stopped selling it now, hence looking for an alternative. Seems expensive but it's only 2 tanks of fuel.

Ian,I've had an email from Morris Oils who tell me that the V Twin 20/50 mineral oil contains 1200 ppm of ZDDP.Sorry it took so long.I'm still looking into this subject. The highest ppm content I've found so far is 1300.Apparently the optimum content is 1600 ppm.I shall keep looking.
It looks quite possible that the problems Guzzi have experienced with cam wear quite recently could be down to the unsuitability of modern oils thus the reason for there move to roller followers. I think I may be becoming obsessed. |

Ah yes because "ZDDP attacks or 'poisons' catalytic converters" ergo it's being reduced in modern oils.

I found this today.It has 2000ppm ZDDP.Perhaps that's the stuff I want.Oh dear,is 2000ppm too much?Decisions decisions. The £54.00 price is for a 25 litre drum! Edited by Dave P. - 05 Oct 2016 at 20:24 |

I did used to buy ZDDP additive in small bottles. Added about 1% by volume to the oil if memory serves. Apparently too much can be bad as well.
