That's great, cheers!
I am running a 165 main at the moment which does worry me - if yours runs fine on that, maybe my problem is elsewhere. My valves are at 8 thou now. Guy Wain agrees with you, the stock setting is too tight. I have a pair of K19 needles but went back to the K18 standards. Might buy a pair of K27s just to try them out. Interestingly, Gutsibits marks K27s as being fitted to US spec carbs... different emissions regs maybe? For £7.60 each, might be worth a go. I'm not sure what the 50/3 slider/throttle valve does. Is that a different carb slider than stock? I think I need to check out the spark, but not sure how. I'll try this timing strobe gun I have, nothing to lose in checking the timing. It looks simple enough, clips onto the battery for power then an HT lead for the pickup. As frustrating as this all is, I'm enjoying learning my way through it, with the help of your good self, and everyone else who has contributed. I'm very grateful! |

Don't allow yourself be confused by what things are supposed to be for or do. It's a point of whether they are fit for the purpose or not. It's very subjective.....
The K27 needles are for the American market but it was the profile of them that I found worked best for me at the time on the lowest notch, 3rd or 4th - so they are high in the sliders giving a richer mixture. That's not so say they are completely correct. Occasionally mine gets bogged down at low speed and small throttle openings but who wants to ride like that ? K18 3rd notch are the standard ones in the manual for the 1100S but they actually are listed as suitable for 30 - 36mm PHF carbs not the PHM 40's fitted but who's to say yours runs better using them but with bigger jets. Time will tell. There's always room for development. Be interesting to know what you end up with. The slider reference refers to the accelerator pump ramp and cut out so, a 50/3 slide has a 5mm cutaway and a number 3 ramp which has a longer ramp whereas no.5 is shorter and steeper. |

I've been thinking about disassembling, cleaning and greasing the shaft UJs. Is bearing high pressure grease of black lithium best? Or something else?

I have used lithium grease for the time I've had The Mistress and have no problem with it although some high pressure anti fling stuff would be just as good - like what is used on tractor (I kid you not) PTO's. There are three nipples. You will need a gun with a thin walled applicator, the end UJ's are tight and need to be got at through the holes in the housings. The front is accessible from above, the rear from below. The one on the splines is easy. Pump enough through till it starts oozing out from the seals and Bobs yr uncle.
The main thing is to do it often. You will find it gets flung out all around the tunnel etc and you'll have to clean it off. Messy bit worth it. Don't take the UJ's apart, you will have to replace them and they are expensive and an odd size. If they aren't broke don't fix 'em just grease them like there's no tomorrow. Happy Xmas F. |

Johnno,
Been a while, trust you are well. I am revisiting my jetting set up and now believe I'm running mains that are too rich. Dark but not sooty plugs and a dark exhaust have lead me to order 160 mains which I will change at this springs service. Let you know how I get on... |

The main jets will only affect fuelling at 3/4 to full bore. If you have done a plug chop at those throttle openings, fair enough, but it's more likely that the needle/needle jet is where your richness comes from.

True enough. There have been some interesting articles from Australia re jetting with the use of a dyno. Thought provoking.
I've been tinkering with her. Fitted mirrors from a VFR that won't move (the mirrors that is), new rubber grips - the mice ate what remained of the old foam one's, replaced the twin battery set up with a single gel type on its side and am about to embark on a full service.

It will run quite happily on 155's depending on the needle jet.
My reasoning is that I now don't use WOT like used to so there's no need for the really strong mixture 165's give. Getting sensible at 61...oh dear! |
