Dear all,

I have booked holidays and a cottage in the Lake District for the third week of August.

As already done for the Peak District this spring, I would love to tap on the collective wisdom of this place for suggestions about best routes, passes, breweries, & other useful information.

I will travel with my R1200RT so no sporty rides are in the program (though the thing can be damn fast if you ask me); rather, I am thinking of enjoying hills and the occasional mountain at more or less legal speeds, perhaps stopping for a good microbrewery, and enjoying some walk in some nice little village.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Omobono

Third week of August, Lake District? - you're not going to be going anywhere fast, not even on foot!

It's a beautiful part of the world, right enough. And we have a few people local to those parts who are certain to have some recommendations. Take your camera. Or your paint and brushes!

If you enjoy a miniture steam train ride try the Ravenglass railway.

V7 Classic Black and gold was the best. But green & black was nice too. Now blue is in!

No..2

The Kirkstone Pass.

You can either start at Windermere,or go to Ambleside and go up the from there. I think they call the hill from Ambleside The Struggle, get to Kirkstone Pass Inn and the views are fabulous.

That's it, must do.

From Ambleside, ride the length of Langdale, from Skelwith Bridge through Chapel Stile, to Dungeon Ghyll, where there is a pub (National Trust) and a steep walk up the hill, next to the waterfall, to a tarn. That, or a bit of a ramble round the fields in the valley. Beware of the bull, he gave us a helluva fright.
The ride should be nothing too challenging, but some nice views for the pillion...

There is a route from there, over the tops to the Wrynose, but I've only ever been in the car.

There's a motor museum in the South Lakes, with Bluebird replicas, if you like that sort of thing.

Last one from me..

Go to Buttermere...

Syke Farm Tea Rooms..

Leave there, turn right out of the car park, approx 150yds up the hill, turn left at the church and just follow the road all the way to Braithwaite. Fabulous stuff.

Hardknott and Kirkstone pass are ace .You can start off on a sunny day and when you get to the highest point you can be hammered by hail no matter what time of year and you might be over taken by a cycle rider some of them are seriously fastThumbs Up
