As many people are, I was unhappy with the breather on my V50 gearbox which contrives to chuck half the oil over the top of the box. So I came up with this modification.

1. Spun the "top hat" off in the lathe then bored and tapped the remains 5/16" Cycle (not having any metric taps), cut down a 5/16" stud and bored it through 3mm:

2. Secured the bored stud into the body with JB weld to ensure oil tightness:

3. Installed with a new alloy sealing washer:

4. Fitted a breather tube teed into the output from the engine breather box:

I did much the same, but just used araldite to fit a tube into the original breather.

One of my V50`s has the original top hat whereas the other has a large bore breather pipe routed under the bike, however both do not blow oil from the breathers which always appear dry. Question is does anybody know why a lot of these bikes blow oil out of the gearbox and others don`t?

I'm not much help but (so far) the V35 has not blown gear oil out of the breather, I don't actually recall it doing so BITD either
It’s more fun to try to ride a slow bike fast .....

Might just be down to the actual oil level in the box, IIRC the original V50 required 1 litre of oil, I think it was reduced later.

I've heard that too, and prefer to have the full litre so one reason for the mod.

excuse my ignorance here... looking at my v50 there is some fluid in the recess on top of the casing under the carbs, i assumed this was small amount of fuel.  mixed with dirt/oil/wd40, never more than a thin layer.     this `top hat` thing , is there actually a hole somewhere on it to breathe out of ? i can`t see one but the bike still has all it`s clothes on so it`s possible i just am not close enough to see,

The "hole" is round the base of that top hat.

Have a sniff of that oil. Mine routinely dumps oil on there but it is from the engine breather not the gearbox.

Mine was definitely from the gearbox as it was pink! Now replaced by proper stuff with a hearty squirt of molyslip.

I thought this breather had a spring and plunger underneath it

It does.......

It's the gear selector plunger.

one bike of mine has a large pipe fitted over the sawn off top hat but even running without it fitted there is still no oil spillage. I also have a litre in there but no additive, so it seems like the luck of the draw as to if it leaks or not.
