hello, please forgive me if i have failed to notice the answer to my question if it is posted elsewhere, and do please tell me where elsewhere is. specifically, i have a moto guzzi 750sp manufactured in 1995. it has been off the road for several years after it was stolen and damaged by some charming seaside yobs. i have since bought parts and am somewhat stuck in my rebuild as i cannot find the correct data to install the clutch flywheel arrangement, this bike has the ignition picked up at the flywheel by a proximity sensor on the engine block which is triggered by nodes on the flywheel. it does not have points, it does not have the ignition on the front of the engine under a cover. i have spoken to various guzzi mechanics and had several variations on the timing theme suggested to me but they are not correct. i do see the various marks on the flywheel and on the pressure plate and i would be eternally grateful if some individual where able to clearly expound on what i am supposed to put where so as i can ride my bike. i am not a novice with spanners and tech talk. feel free to get as complex as you like. i only really need to know is which mark goes where when the motor is at tdc left cylinder. thank you. best wishes and keep the shiny side up.

I don't have experience with the bike but why not take the plugs out, put it in top gear and rotate the engine using the back wheel while feeling for TDC on the LH cylinder (to be sure it's the compression stroke you could pop the valve cover off and check that both valves have clearance). Then you will be able to see which mark is what?
Unless I have totally misunderstood which is quite likely...... |

I believe it's called a Digiplex ignition.
I hope that helps tremendously, because beyond that I know NOthing.

Yes, it will be the digiplex ignition.
Have a look here to see if there is a workshop manual for your bike. That will describe all you need to know.

Top shout.
I just googled digiplex and I think that JPC is on the right track. Plenty of info on google, including links to This old tractor and Ian Falloon so I think you’ve helped move the OP on a bit |

thank you for the replies. the bike is apart, in pieces g/box separate from engine, clutch flywheel assembly on the floor. agreed, it is a digiplex and i have several workshop manuals in italian and english, non of which discuss the digiplex.
i have already timed it to tdc on the left pot using a dial gauge on the flywheel, it tries valiantly to start and will occasionally stutter on. of course it might be another gremlin in something else on the ignition or fuel components however i will not be able to confirm any such thing unless i know i have the timing correct. there is no ignition timing as such, one simply bolts on the pieces and they all ought to line up. and there is more than one mark on the various components. |

Have a look in the California 3 manual as it uses the same digiplex ignition, I don't think you can actually adjust anything mechanically but you can join 2 wires on the digiplex which alters the advance a couple of degrees, does yours have the vaccum advance pipe on it ? its not going to work very well if it needs it ?
Section 24.7 in this manual http://www.thisoldtractor.com/mg_manuals/workshop_manual_california_1000_1000-i_1100_1100-i_it-en.pdf Good luck Edited by Keef Mayhem - 06 Mar 2018 at 19:54 |

Yes, I think the Digiplex system is better documented in the big block manuals of that time.
To be honest, it never had a good name.

I stumbled onto this on a french Guzzi forum:
The gist of it is that the Digiplex-compatible diagnostic gizmo is common in Fiat and Alfa workshops. It might reveal a fault other than timing ?

Quite likely, lots of Guzzi stuff is shared with Fiat.

Hi
Did you solve your ignition set up problems yet. I have 1994 750 Nevada project and have same problem, not sure how to check spark is in correct position 7 degrees before TDC. Any help would be welcome
