The speedo drive on my V65 has failed (the little gear box on the front wheel spindle). Looks like wear & tear as all I can see is the crown gear(?) fails to engage with the worm gear constantly, and then the gears jam once every revolution.
Shame really as the speedo is on 82,520km and I wanted to see it go round the clock. My options are :- Buy a new speedo drive c£65 Buy a secondhand speedo drive £? Buy a GPS speedo £? Can you please tell me about GPS speedo's? (I have searched the forum but not got many hits). What to look for and what to avoid? Go they work in remote areas? And everything else... ta stuart |

Why not get one of those bicycle ones? Dead cheap and easy to fit and probably more accurate than the one you've got fitted!

V7 Classic Black and gold was the best. But green & black was nice too. Now blue is in!

what I added to my bikes is a bike speedo fitted the magnet to the spokes on the EV and the rim on the V1000 the pick up I cable tied to the brake caliper on one the mudguard stay on the other as long as to measure the circumference of the whole wheel accurately they are real good up to 80+ under £10 on e bay .....for a replacement drive box as always e-bay, Gutsibits, Reboot you can try Nigel at NBS if you know the ratios then you can look further, cheapest gps speedo works same as a sat nav set on console shows the speed there is a lag ....to be fair a lot of custom bikes use pushbike speedos ....for alternatives look at "Digital speedos" and ETB Instruments their sensors work the same as a pushbike speedo, sensor fixed and magnets attached to the wheel or disc so it causes an induction pulse, newer Guzzis use these too

I put one on my Sportster after the needle fell off the speedo and I sent it off for repair. As you calibrate them to the wheels size you can set them up very accurately. I also found at speed that as you clicked over 99 per an extra digit appeared rather than rolling back through zero. What cyclist needs that? And have you found that on the Sunbeam?

V65 may not be affected but from April 1984 speedos must display mph and kph at same time, or able to display either separately ", by the operation of a switch ". I imagine speedos must work all the time, including in tunnels. A GPS speedo is not going to be sufficiently accurate within the regulations when you are on a gradient over 1 in 10 - GPS measures the distance (it thinks you) travelled over time but it is the flat/horizontal distance it uses, I believe GPS does not take into account height changes. So when going up a gradient it takes the horizontal distance from A to B, not the actual, greater distance travelled. So the calculation is off. It's hard to describe trigonometry without drawings! My GPS in the car and the previous Garmin, tells me my elevation at any moment. But one of those cycle ones would best suit you. But also of course the odometer won't be working either, so you could end up selling a very low mileage bike.

Thanks for all your replies.
The gradient issue is an interesting point - hadn't thought of that. As is my nature, I'll start off with the cheap solution of a bicycle speedo and go from there. ta stuart |

That one shown on the Sunbeam does have kph or mph toggle and on the lower setting choose from clock/odo/even set distance to service it then shows a spanner the odo packed up on my bike so I set this and do oil changes accordingly, made a note so have estimated mileage, since bought replacement speedo but THAT has 28k miles up SO waiting a few months before replacing it , nb if you use a bike speedo many have removable speedo head do that as hot sunlight if left parked can kill the lcd display .....these are under £10 on e-bay
oh yeah DO NOT go for a wireless one the o/p from alternator gives false reading like 60 mph when stood still lol Edited by Ken-Guzzibear - 26 Jun 2018 at 11:07 |

Yes, there were far more functions on that unit than I ever needed including average speed etc - most of which I never worked out how to use. That one was, as you say, removable. The only slight difficulty is getting the magnet / sensor distance correct as you need a very small clearance to make it work properly.

To be fair it is easy to toggle thro' I found just about all digital clocks are the same hold both till screen flashes to set then left ok ...move on I use the mph and clock ....with the service setting running in the back ground .....the temp setting I sometimes look at ...I find them easy to calibrate easy to read and way more accurate than the 76 V1000 speedo

I used to race bicycles. Stuff I was most interested in was current speed- seeing if pulling another gear would give me a little more, distance covered and time elapsed. It was mostly against the clock for a given distance.

Stuart - it's just an unknown question for me, I don't know how the GPS makes the speed calculation. If the GPS makes a 3 dimensional calculation then the figure should be OK. TONY
