I am rebuilding an old 850/1000 engine and all my spare cam followers are worn flat or worse. I'm putting in a quality reground cam and don't want to risk damaging it.

Checking the prices at various well-known Guzzi parts suppliers, it seems that cam followers have increased in price significantly since the last engine I did in 2006.

Has anyone here any experience of having cam followers resurfaced?

Can anyone recommend an engineering works to carry out this task?

TIA

Joy Engineering over in Bishops Stortford may be worth a call.

Looks like they are permanently closed

£45 each from Gutsibits, but incl. VAT - still I'd fork out for new ones, I was too tight to even back in 1998, when changing a camshaft, as the existing ones still looked perfectly good, but lasted only 130 miles. Ouch

Also trashed the camshaft so that repair cost 2 - 3 times more. Unhappy

To check the cam followers, What normally happens is they start showing signs of pitting in the centre, which is the hardening getting chipped off. That means they want replacing.

www.newman-cams.com

I've had good service from Newman's. They have done cams and followers for me in the past. They were however Laverda twin parts, not Guzzi.

The cam followers actually ARE flat.
I haven't rebuilt a big block in a while, but I seem to remember that they're slightly off-center to the cam, to ensure they rotate with each stroke and wear evenly, so they couldn't be radiused.
Look for confirmation, don't ruin a new camshaft on my account (obviously) !

I've just bought a cam follower yesterday for Euro 32.52. I seem to recall that two years ago they were nearer Euro 20. So I think they've gone up a fair percentage as well. ConfusedConfused

So have I. He did the followers on my bacon slicer and gave good honest free advice, wasn't just after the money.

I had issues with new followers. It seems a like a recurring problem in the last few years.
Maybe because of low quality of later years parts, maybe bacause of low zddp in current engine oils.
Sorry I can't give you any practical advice other than take the thing apart for inspection after running in.

Didn't Newman do the cams etc for RaceCo ?, if so I think i'd go there, or whoever used to do them for RaceCo, bought mine from RaceCo a few years back, all good so far, not sure if RaceCo still dabble in that area of Guzzis these days?.

Purchased new cam followers from our friends at Stein Dinse - they are all very mildly convex as is the one new spare I had. Perhaps 10-20 thou when held against a steel straight edge.

RaceCo (now no longer trading for Guzzi) strongly advised against refurbishing or refinishing old cam followers.
