here' a daft question: is there supposed to be any kind of support under the nose of the saddle? (V7 special with standard dual seat)

I've got a good 3/4 inch gap between it and the frame and it bends a bit when sat on. I think it's bolted on right!

I imagine there could be a rubber block on the frame that's missing or on the underside of the saddle, but I can't see anything in the parts list.

Thanks in advance Paul

The only fixings I'm aware of are the brackets at the rear which are held fast by the shock absorber top stud and nut. Then there are the annoying M8 bolts which screw into the seat base from under a lug on the frame. These can be hard to locate, so on my V7 Special I've fitted studs to the seat base then fit flanged nuts from beneath.

I've just been and had a look at my bikes and there is no flex in the seats when I press down on them. Is your seat base possibly bent up at the nose slightly? These seat bases are the heaviest built I've ever seen. Like the rest of the bike, they look as if they were made in a tank factory.

Thanks Dave,
it looks as if it may have got a bit bent then.
I think I may copy your studs idea though and perhaps put a rubber pad between the seat and frame.

Those seat bases can get a bit bendy when they corrode. I took mine apart to replace the foam and the base was much rustier than I thought so I ended up repairing it and also welding in a bit of extra material to stiffen it, especially at the front.

V700 seats had a bracket that bolted to the frame in the front, later Loops just a thick, hard rubber pad glued to the seat.

Ah, thanks Charlie, that's another thing we've learned. A pity details such as that aren't shown in the parts book. I'll be adding some rubber support to my seat soon.
