Me again peeps.

Can anyone please tell me the purpose of these?  Why have a counterbore too small for the cap screw head?  Why the fibre washers to fill this void? Why have a counterbore at all?

Thanks

Mark

I believe they are supposed to reduce heat transfer into the carbs but insulating the capscrew from direct contact with the inlet stub. Some people also fit 2 gaskets on each stub too.

Yes have noticed this fibre stuff infilling the holes too, and I think too what he said

Don't know bout some people, there should be TWO thick gaskets, and the Allen bolts won't tighen up (bottom out in the cyl. head holes) if one is missing, or they're not thick enough, on purpose, as a warning that you're doing it wrong.

Big smile

Are the extra thick gaskets on sale the equivalent of 2 gaskets by chance?
Not sure how they would insulate the carbs from heat as the heat will just transfer along the stub itself and also along the capscrew shaft directly from the head anyway.
At least the thick gasket will help in this way.

Gutzi bits sell thick and thin gaskets though Ken, so is one thick the equivalent perhaps?

The gasket insulates the stub from the head. The carb is insulated from the stub by the plastic sleeve.
The capscrew shank should not touch the stub as the holes provide clearance, so the only metal-metal contact would be under the heads of the screws. Hence the fibre washers.

All that being said, I don't think it's too important in our temperate climate?

you do need 2x thick gaskets per side. If you ring Gutsibits he knows it off by heart and will send you everything you need.

The thin one is for Le Mans only. The inlet stub is different, shorter, different bend, and 6mm bolts instead of 8mm. And the carb is mounted to it via a rubber coupling sleeve.

No, two thin ones are still not equal to one thick one, the thick one is still thicker than both.
