Hello everyone,

I recently bought a LM1 from 1976. The bike is 100% original and has never been restored. It is in ok condition, but need some love, and my plan is to tour europe on it so for that purpose I want to totally restore it and upgrade some parts to make it more reliable without changing anything visually on it.

I am going to fire off some questions and reach out for good advice about my restoration plans here.

Best regards
Søren

Welcome to Guzziriders ..... These bikes are totally capable of well over 100k miles before needing anything other than basic servicing change the oils/filters regularly put K&N filters on the inlet as the open bell mouths will cause premature wear in the engine

It is leaking oil into combustion champer on the right cylinder, I am guessing it needs new pistion rings or valve guide seals.

It has always been run without air filters but I would like to add filters. Those KN cone filters, I have a hard time finding room for them, they hit the part of the frame that are closests to the velocity stack. What do you guys do here?

on my V1000 , i had to cut the front edge on the side panels ..... so smoking on the right hand side yep when you renew rings renew the top end gudgeon pin circlips they wear from the inside and if one fails ....new bore ...guess how i know ....nb Cast iron rings fit both cast and plated cylinders worth getting valve guides done and new valves at the same time ....depending on mileage ....as i say no filtration will cause premature wear .... loads of info on the net .....

New valves even? Do they wear that much?

Depending on engine condition of course, are the breathers all clear?
If the breathers are gunged up then you could blow up past the rings.
You could do wet and dry compression tests (don't forget to hold throttle open) to see what compressions you have.
