Hi All,

1980 LM2 - ignition switch has potentially gone on the fritz.  When switching off the key the engine continues to happily run until I hit the kill switch.

Just wondered if anyone here has knowledge of how the ignition switch is wired to help my initial fault finding.  Should I be getting a ground through the switch, in which case maybe there is a poor connection, or could the ignition circuit stay powered in another way to result in continual running.

Pondering on a working day without being able to get my hands on it - thought I'd ask the useful folks here.

Many Thanks - G

The 1976 LM diagram I have shows a red wire from the regulator to the switch (30), a white wire from the switch (50)  to the handlebar kill switch and thence back to the coils.

Looks like your switch isn’t switching off.  If it’s not actually broken, I’d be looking for conductive paste of grease and wear particles in the switch.  If you can, strip & clean.

What does the neutral light do?

No shortcuts, have it out for a good coating of looking at. An internal short is not good, there is no fuse for the ignition circuit side! Some people have had these switches disintegrate or the bottom fall out. Connectors are 4 bullets type in the base (or mine were). Don't hang about, potential for an electrical fire. maybe even disconnect the battery.

These were a Fiat car ignition switch not worth messing about with disconnect the battery get a replacement switch and pop it in.

They fail due to vibration and water ingress

Stripped mine a few years ago just to check the integrity of the internals and give it a clean, still going strong; also '80 LM2. Mind you I did the startus interuptus mod too so the ignition doesn't go through the switch any more, the switch now just makes a relay to enable the ignition.
