I have an Odyssey on one and a Motobatt on the other. The Motobatt is over seven years old and the Odyssey somewhat older. They are both doing well but I did adjust the regulators down to give a float charge of around 13.8 volts as AGM batteries can apparently over charge at anything above 14volts. I gleaned that information from the link below.
I think there is still some variation of views on the subject but it works fine for me. Cheaper lawnmower batteries also do the job, I haven't tried one...........yet!https://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/absorbent_glass_mat_agm A good source of supply.https://www.tayna.co.uk/motorcycle-batteries/ Edited by Dave P. - 31 Aug 2021 at 22:46 |

Thanks Dave will check it out before ordering, problem being bike spends most of its time idle connected to a "smart charger" that is supposed to keep it in perfect shape, the last has lasted less than 2 years in this state mind you it is only a cheap generic ride on mower type.
Thanks again, Chris

Not a good idea to leave a charger connected all the time. There is always the risk of drying the battery out. Better to put it on charge for a few hours every two or three weeks, and use a decent smart charger. Others have used the lawnmower batteries and had them live for many years. One more general point, all batteries lose capacity over time, so for longevity the higher the capacity in Amp Hours the better. Don't get obsessed by the CCA figure, most batteries of the size you need are well up to supplying the current. An AGM battery being charged to a max of 13.8 volts will never get fully charged. The problem with AGM style batteries is that they contain very little electrolyte, so if overcharged, it can dry out. Don't take everything from the battery University as gospel. I ruined a NiCad battery following their exact instructions, instead of rejuvinating as they said it killed it completely. But I would certainly recommend Tayna as a very good source of batteries. Good selection, good prices and next day delivery.

I use Tayna bought a battery for my V1000 recently £44 delivered 2 yr warranty. If you do not use your bike that much at least start it up it gives the battery a "whack" helps stop it getting lazy and or sulphating. If you buy an AGM battery make sure your charging system will deliver the 13.8V charge or it WILL die and fast ....I bought a Leoch AGM £44 delivered 2 yr warranty the EV one has been in almost 3 yrs and seems fine
Fires up the 1100 EV you do have to juggle around and read the info Measure existing battery, AGM are often smaller |

Thanks Brian and Ken, the Leoch agm is certainly worth considering as it has a 2 year guarantee as opposed to the 12 months on the majority, will take on board the possible over charging and as suggested maybe switch the charger on once a month or so, once again thanks for your input and advice gents.
Regards Chris

Unless you have a 12v clock fitted, there should be no parasytic drain on the battery when the ignition is off. So you should only need to top up the battery every few months if the bike is not used. I clock will slowly drain the battery, so once a month would then be advisable.

Here in the US, I use a battery meant for the Mazda MX5 Miata. Original battery frame fits nicely once two tabs are removed from the top of the battery. Average life is ~ 9 years.

Which particular Leoch AGM battery are we talking about. £44 delivered certainly looks like good value.
