My battery doesn't seem to be able to hold a charge these days so I'm in search of a new one.

I've been looking into lithium as they seem to have many advantages.

The question is (lithium discussion aside); what kind of battery do I need to crank a 1000cc v twin?

I presume the higher the amps, the faster it will crank, thus start the engine more easily?

What are my boundaries in looking for a really good new battery?

Thanks chaps

p.s I bought my current battery a few years ago but during the build I think I abused the battery (draining it etc.) and now seems pretty knackered. It's an odyssey PC625. Is this battery even good enough for the bike new?

As has been stated elsewhere it`s the size of the space available that denotes which battery you can fit
It`s not always the case that the higher the amps the faster it will crank as with my R1150RT it always turns over at its own pace regardless of which battery I connect to it. The bike has no known starting faults and is meticulously maintained

Tayna go to site pop vehicle it will give you options ..... with wet batteries the cranking amps may be lower than AGM but Ah rating way higher,.....AGM are smaller if on a Bosch charging system you need to replace old Voltage reg for solid state variable one and set it at 14.2V to keep an AGM battery sweet, to be fair the OEM wet battery tend to last longer on older bikes with Bosch charging systems ...I have bought the Numax ones low price seem to last 4-5 yrs before going.... depending on use a bike used daily the battery lasts way longer the start up bang actually keeps a battery healthier than one kept on a smart charger ......

Thanks for this!

That site is amazing.

So I upgraded my charging system to a Bosh STK-502. When I measure the volts going into the battery it reads around 13v at fairly high revs. I presume it doesn't exceed 14v.

Are you saying I need a wet battery for this kind of charging system?

I found this battery which seems to have super high AH and CCA ratings at the dimensions I need. What do you think?

Thanks!

me i would fit the wet Yuasa battery .....wet ones were the oem ones the charge system may not keep the AGM topped up, agm's do not like a slow drain from alarms or a clock and need a higher charge rate if you are getting 13.8V at 2000+ revs the system is more suited to Wet battery to be fair
