I've just bought a bike registered as a "classic" and contacted Footman James for insurance. Price for cover ended up about £25.00 higher than the original quote because I don't own a car registered in my name. WTF! AngryCan anyone give a sensible and logical explanation for the pricing of insurance cover?

I did but I don't think the fact that I'm insured to drive the wife's car as a daily drive can have registered with the person I spoke to. I've just spoken to them again and now I'm waiting for them to get back to me with either a clearer explanation or a refund; hopefully the latter!

Obviously they thought you were going to use your 1926 Shuttleworth Snap as an everyday commuter!

Footman James, like Carole Nash, no longer have knowledgeable people working for them. Go to Peter James, who do.

In my experience every bike and engine configuration has its own charms and I will miss being lulled to sleep at the traffic lights by the gentle rocking motion!

Whilst we're talking insurance (I know, here we go again but hang in there it's worth it, ) I've just renewed mine. Having 8 bikes ranging from 1979 to 2004 on the policy makes it a real pain going through the details with several companies most of whom don't know a a Le Mans from a Lemon or have heard of Gasgas or Gilera! They all have different criteria for classic and different mileage restrictions, etc.

Anyway, it took me the thick end of 3 days to get comparable quotes from 4 companies. I had to discount Bennetts and one other as they have now got a restriction that says they will not provide theft or damage cover within half a mile of the house if it's not in the garage. Not just if it's left out overnight but at any time. I.e. when it's being washed, when you've rolled the bike out and are shutting the door or getting the keys!

So, for all of these I've 10+ years no claims, no accidents or convictions & wanted European & breakdown cover.

We started with Carol Nash who I was already with - £443.
Footman James  - £383, with a mileage restriction of 5,000 miles OVER ALL 8! ((625 miles per bike!)
Footman James  - £303, if I joined the VMCC, with a mileage restriction of 10,000 miles OVER ALL 8!
Peter James  - £353.
RH Specialist Insurance (who I'd just chatted to at Stafford) - £258 with a mileage restriction of 3,000 miles per bike.

Big differences, eh? Any guesses where I went?   I would say that at least that's it for a year but then there's my car, the wife's car, the house, etc, etc . . .

Have used RH for four years now don't even bother with other quotes. Service good at reasonable prices.

Interesting; they weren't on my radar till I saw the guy at Stafford & I thought I had canvassed all the decent companies. But I can't fault the staff - English speaking (never a certainty!), competent and by far the best price.  Just waiting for the docs to arrive to see where the catch is!

I've wrote this before, don't ever say will be garaged, won't be covered if just left outside for a minute or several.

Peter James specify that the "garaged" clause only applies between  10pm and 6am.

Sorry to bang on about this but another little twist to this saga is that after the refund the revised docs arrived this morning. First thing I noticed was "agreed value" hadn't been included even though I'm pretty sure I asked for it. Another call and it's now on at an extra cost of course. More stuff to arrive through the post so it's just as well I have plenty of time to read through it all!

Another load of paperwork from FJ not stating insurance includes agreed value! After 3 phone call to get it sorted it's still wrong. They don't seem very efficient so very much doubt I'll be renewing with them next year.

+1

Carole Nash has been very disappointing of late. As in "several hundred pounds more expensive"-disappointing for the combined policy Guzzi-BMW. Bennett, to me, is even worse. However, Carole Nash were pretty competitive for the Guzzi.

Excellent experience with Peter James up to now. Blew Bennett and Carole Nash out of the water like it's Pearl Harbor.

Have mentioned RH Classic before, best company I have been insured with.
Good to talk to on telephone. Classic insurance starts at twenty years.
Insurance last year two bikes comprehensive with agreed value cost £125 Renewal quote for this year £128.
With regards to parking at home they ask that it is garaged between ten pm and six am, not at all times like other insurers
Telephoned recently and removed one motorcycle and added another asking for cover note for DVLA
Cover note emailed to me whilst still on phone. No admin charges for changes. That is what I call service

I also have experienced excellent service from RH, and been impressed by the fact that having added to, and subtracted bikes from, my policy the highest charge I’ve incurred is £5, and they waived that!

Just tried hr Insurance for the Kawasaki I am receiving on 15 June. List price £5999.

The best quote was Aviva at around £1,100, actually same as Bennett.

For a comparison, Peter James has offered £180 for around 10 months.

I am awaiting for an offer from RH but at this point I like Peter James more and more...

Thanks.

looks like you have to have a classic before they will look at anything else.
