I got my parts from Lamers, there weren't any in UK. I suspect no UK dealer will hold them in stock and source when required due to cost

Ive been holding off posting because I didnt wish to tempt fate but I now think a happy ending is looming.

While exploring my options, I got into discussion with QB Motorcycles at Cradley heath who until recently were a MG dealer and still have and intend to keep an approved workshop for them. The end result is that over the past few weeks they have stripped the heads, measured the tolerances and sent them and photos to Piaggio who have now agreed to supply the new parts FOC and I only have to pay £450 for the labour element.

OK its still a bill that I didnt expect to have and Ive missed most of the summer and I will be talking to the original dealer to see if I can embarrass them into at least making a contribution, but I am pretty impressed that Piaggio/MG are prepared to honour a warranty claim on a 10 year old bike.

Hoping to get it back in the next couple of weeks.

What a result, so pleased it worked out for you, it restores my faith in Piaggio to a certain extent and the workshop that, effectively, must have put a strong case together on your behalf to submit to them.

I've never had the slightest interest in any bike built after 1979 and I don't usually read about bikes when I don't know what they are but I've found this saga both eloquent and riveting and interspersed with helpful advice from forum members. I think that the O/Ps patience and flexibility has been rewarded with a good solution from what appears to be a dealer in shining armour.
It would be easy to assume that the original dealers were a bunch of twats but they may have genuinely believed that they acting correctly, it would be interesting to read their response to all this.
Congratulations on a good result Jon, do let us know what happens next.

i failed with Piaggio on my Norge - 3 years old 13000 miles,  only dealer serviced until warranty ran out - that was their excuse for not supplying parts.    i tried them just after they had won a court case with a Stelvio claiming they had liability so maybe they were feeling less generous.

bought the parts myself and did the work myself,  actually not that difficult on a Norge.

Like my mate Saultrader above I have followed this saga with interest, though like him I know nothing about the later twins. What really puzzles me is why this trouble arose in the first place. It appears that no one has the answer. What is it that wears out,the cam' or the followers or both?
Anyway, persistence has won the day so well done Jon.

If the clearances were done at the last service, and have opened up so much, then I'd say it's too late to just fit the Roller Kit.

Once the gaps are increasing that quickly, it means all the DLC (Diamond Like Coating) has gone, and you're into the metal of the Tappet Faces.
The resulting debris is now circulating in the Oil, as others have mentioned.

The Pump, Big Ends, and Main Bearings will all be starting to deteriorate.
As the front Main is part of the Crankcase (not separate Shells), you're looking at a new Engine, not just replacing Bearing Shells and a Crank Grind/Polish.

I am pleased that the owner is making progress and hopefully the issue will be resolved satisfactorily. However this does not reflect my experience of QB Motorcycles. I hope for the sake of nB74 that the repairs go smoothly. One thing I would suggest though is that you inspect every inch of the bike before paying the repair bill or removing the bike from their premises.

Afraid so.
However, Pete Roper in Oz has never had to open one up in all the years they've been around, so I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
Regular Oil and Filter changes should see them running as long as any other Guzzi.

Yes, I take your point regarding Pete Ropers' experience. However, the fact that the separate bearings for earlier machines are still manufactured, and stocked by spares suppliers suggests that they are still needed so must wear out eventually. Happily those engines can be refurbished without having to replace the crank case, which would be the situation with the engine in question. Is this just a cost-cutting exercise.

Nail on the head Dave P...I'm pretty sure you could machine the cases and replacement main bearings so they would fit but it's just more hassle and money.vehicles are so much more disposable than when we were kids.......
