rebuilding an LM1I seem to remember (but cant find it here or elsewhere) there is some smart-art to attaching the lower ends of the speedo and tacho cables, that they are adjustable somehow for length?
Does the brass ferrule just drop into the cable mounting point on engine and gearbox? Am I overthinking a simple cable?!

The brass ferrule is clamped round the outer when you do up the nut. No fixed position, just fit the cable and clamp.

Need to fit the top ends to the instruments before you tighten the ferrules, as that is what sets the length of the outer sleeve relative to the inner cable. Get it wrong, inner can be too tight or too loose. There should also be a rubber gaiter at the bottom end of the sleeve, I have had to wrap the top end of this with tape to seal it, and then a small cable tie to keep the tape on tight, to stop water getting in, ditto the tacho cable; if water gets in the inner cable rusts and breaks, doesn't matter how much grease you have put on. Guess how I know. |

Perfect thanks. Im sure I discovered that tape-trick on someone's Guzzi tips page - maybe yours!?
I thought about using heat shrink to bridge the gap between cable-outer and lower cable-rubber 'mount'

That's what the cable ties are for.
Yes I do have a Guzzi tips page on the net. Mine was probably a low-tech solution, at the time I only had plastic insulation tape and some small cable ties, so that's what I used. But I didn't have any more cable breaks after, so I left it. |
