will the later tappets ( 17045860) fit and work in place of the originals (12045800)? They seem to be the same diameter.

I just thought I'd have a look at them to get any bits of base gasket out before putting the barrels back on and found the faces were quite pitted.

Yes but you need to change the pushrods to the later type too assuming your refering to the early tappets used up to the 850 T.

thanks Chris, can you tell me what the difference between them is?
The new part number is from an 850t3, and mine is a v7 special

The diameter of the pushrod ball is different and so they are not mixable. Not sure why they were up dated but it happened at the same time as they changed the angle of the rocker arms in order to allow lager bores I think.Pretty sure you would be able to get at least refaced tappets in the US, possibly new available too.The T3 won't work although your rods will go into them.I had the opposite as I bought a T cam and tappets and the T3 pushrods were too big a diameter so I gave the tappets to a friend who was rebuilding an Eldorado....they were perfectly un marked so I was a bit gutted at first to discover the difference but that's life !

If you switch to the T3 lifters/cam followers and pushrods, you'll also need to change the adjuster screws. The ball and socket radius on that end is different as well.

I have batches of original lifters refaced by Delta Camshaft in Tacoma, WA periodically. Just had a batch done so have some on hand. $60 a set + shipping, exchange (need the old ones as cores).

thanks, it's useful to know what the differences are.
I'm going to try to find someone to reface them locally, but I'll keep you in mind Charlie if I draw a blank.
