I'm off to N India on a 2 week bike tour.... all very spontaneous. I'd always fancied it, but it never got to the top of the priority list. I was having lunch on Sunday with a mate - and he said he had done the research and was going June 22 "did I want to come?" Lynn (wife) said "why don't you" (!!!)

Last night the air tickets were bought - point of no return!!!

Has anyone done this sort of thing....any tips?? They provide a Royal Enfield, accomodation etc. We bring our own kit .. and 10 of us ride  (I think) a predetermined route.. but they won't have picked the worst roads will they?

I've never done the India trip much as I'd like to. I did ride my Bullet to Turkey and back in 2009 and loved every minute of the trip but it was hardly the Himalia's. You have the opportunity for the trip of a lifetime so my tip would be, don't over think, it just embrace it and enjoy !!!

I'm very jealous.

Bottled water:  ONLY DRINK FIZZY!  There are certain suppliers who recycle the bottles with local tap water.  You don’t want to drink that.  It might well be fine, but equally, you might spend many hours wishing you were not on a motorbike.

India is amazing, some in a very good way, and some rather less so.  Mostly the people are friendly, the food is fab, and the scenery is astonishing.

Enjoy!

Definitely only drink bottled water where the seal is unbroken and take some imodium or similar with you. No matter how good your personal hygiene, you will end up with Delhi belly at some point, trust me it is guaranteed  because someone else will be preparing your food. I have a cast iron constitution but there were two or three days where the 'situation was fluid' shall we say. Eat bananas if you get hit, high in potassium and as you peel it, it is safe if unwashed. Pack some of those handy wipes in small packets for cleaning hands and anything else. Most of all, enjoy the adventure, it will be worth it. Not been on a bike trip, but India is culturally fascinating.

Thanks for the tips Guys.... I used to go to Bangalore, Chennai and IT centres quite frequently pre 2013 when working for Logica - and always loved it, but it was all free then (expensed), and very corporate. Never had Delhi belly yet... that said a good few colleagues got it..... and it was not nice!  I usually became a vegetarian there.... it served me well... and yes, sealed bottled water only and no ice.

Lots of talk around the dinner table last Sunday of the "golden 10 years". Those years between when you retire (hopefully in reasonable health) and x years later when switching on daytime TV seems quite enough. I'm 66, retired 18 months.... so a year and a half of the "golden years" have gone PM ing the house downsize, and associated building work/kicking builders. One last push on that required, which will deliver a new garage (for meBig smile).. and an extra bedroom.... (so that both kids can stay at home simultaneously). Both kids see that as a waste of their inheritance... but their mother is forever hopeful it will be well used by them. She wins, because it delivers a new larger garage Wink - time will tell whether the 3rd bedroom is used that much by the kids, but I get a new garage, with central heating!!! Weather willing that will be finished before the start of the trip. Roll on June 22.

Back in 2008 I did the Enduro Himalaya organised trip. RE 500 were up to the job, despite being road bikes with iffy tyres we managed some really bumpy gravel roads and high altitudes. Most of the 2000km we covered would be described as off road tracks in the UK, but because I could reach the ground easily and paddle with my feet I kept going...didn't fall off once. Lots of the roads are probably tarmac now as the Chinese were moving in to strip the natural resources.
Apart from the obvious hygiene routines, remember to wash hands when handling money...it's filthy!
Temples were fascinating...how they build on top of mountain peaks is a mystery to me, it was hard enough riding up there.
Temperatures ranged from high 30's to freezing as the sun set...be prepared with riding kit.
And water...drink constantly when riding, dehydration sets in quickly.

Enjoy it, I did. Great adventure and interesting culture and contrasts.
