easily disabled, I have had several high end ones that died for no reason
better off with a flashing LED linked through a relay to come on when the ignition is off
a good lock
and a tracking device

Thank you for your reply; I’m in the process of choosing my options and was wondering whether the alarm was worth the cost.

I have a tracker on the BMW, there is much discussion about them being to blame for flat batteries and inability to start.  I don’t believe it is the cause, the battery is too small, not an issue on older Guzzis at least.

Will you get it back?  Do you want it back after some scrote has ragged it rotten?  Might be worthwhile to save your insurance from a total loss.  The Datatool at least alerts my phone if the bike is moved, might just stop it getting nicked.

A big lock and heavy chain is probably the best you can do, but if they want it badly enough, they’ll come equipped.  And if they are, you’d probably want them not to engage you in debate.

Thank you for your reply; I’ve got a ground anchor and HD chain in the garage, I’m thinking of the risk when touring in the UK , or out and about more than it being stolen from the garage

Yep, I understand.  On last year’s Mandello trip, I tried to park discretely, had an Abus lock on the front disc, and a chain round the rear wheel and something fixed, or just the frame.  Happily no issues.

I think all you can do is make it easier for the oiks to nick someone else’s bike.

So the flashing red led, and advertised alarm and tracker must help.  I hope.

A bike elektrikery specialist told me he took off and disabled more bike alarms than fitted them.

The best deterrents are Datatag, Smartwater  as the bike can be identified. A decent lock & chain, buys you up to 5-10 minutes.

If a determined pro thief wants it they will take it the scum bags look for easy to steal and then get rid of.

Trackers are ok but look if the pro's can steal high end cars with all the alarm/immobiliser/tracker stuff on them nothing is "safe" best you can do is make it easier for them to take another one not yours.

Recently, I was speaking with two traffic officers who specialise in recovering stolen vehicles, they said in nearly half of the cases involving high end car theft, the show off with big motors had not bothered to renew the yearly monitoring charge !!
on one high end supercar, where it was a condition of the insurance, it was 9 months out of date in payment, the owner quickly contacted the tracking company and paid up, the car was located in Birmingham, ( car theft capital of the UK) but already stripped, and the insurance company knew about the failure to pay !! no doubt leading to some adjustments in the payout, the Police officers said that if the nugget had kept the contract going, they would have caught the thief with the car on the back of the transporter and returned it unmarked

other people say they would not want their bike back after it was stolen, my reply to this is leave the bloody keys in it and leave it unlocked to make it easier for them !

the electronic tracking devices generate a trail on the servers, all of this is useful information for the police, even if the bike is stripped, the insurance company have something to either repair or re sell, plus the scum concerned will be prosecuted, houses raided, electronic devices seized etc, and i can assure you the police go through everything with a fine tooth comb, most criminals are lazy and feckless

a friend of mine had a nice motorcycle, I fitted a tracking device, it was stolen from his garage, we tracked it to a garage on a council estate in a nearby town, forced entry to the garage, and recovered it, the owner of the garage was dealt with in a private business arrangement !

if you steal my motorcycle, I am going to find you and hurt you a lot, and because I know exactly where it is I can pick and choose my time

its a fast learning curve for some of these scum, to many of them its a right of passage , and they do it because they enjoy it
I might be a little right wing, but I would happily put a 9mm round between their ears to prevent them breeding and the next generation doing the same ( probably trigger a few snowflakes with my attitude)

an elderly chap around here fitted a very basic tracking device to his camper van ( they are stolen all the time) it got nicked and he located it, you ring the number, it hangs up, and sends you a text message with its location ( not as accurate as a real time tracking device but near enough )
he kept calm and contacted the police without making  a fuss, some clever tech was used, and a massive range rover/land rover theft ring was broken up 5 blokes in prison 170 vehicles or parts located on two separate premises
if you are stupid enough to buy a range rover or land rover, then pay for tracking as it will get stolen from under your nose, or even with violence

amazing, people paying 30 to 70k for a fat useless status symbol with all the extras, but no tracking device ??
cops were amazed that the ring was busted by an elderly bloke with a 3 grand camper van !
anyway up to you

Me I carry a fire extinguisher and first aid kit in the van, never used it, but better to have it when needed
