I have an original Le Mans II rear mudguard that has been previously repainted with the French blue over standard red. The paint is patchy and chipped so needs to come off back to the red or even the base plastic (GRP?).

Not looking forward to three hours with assorted abrasive papers.

Anyone have any ideas on how do speed things up without destroying the mudguard?

I assume Nitromors is a bad idea.

TIA

Nitromors is a very bad idea!

I use Dilunett MarineStrip (previously SafeStrip) on GRP parts.  It's slow, but that aint a bad thing sometimes, I have used it to remove a layer of paint and managed to save the original paint underneath.  It's designed for GRP boats. I've used it on beach buggy, model boat and motorcycle parts with good results.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...

Nitromors is rubbish now. Bought some last year to strip a window sill and never touched it. Apparently they have removed something from it on environmental grounds.

A lot of the old effective paint strippers are no longer available for that reason.

I got VERY effective paint stripper off Ebay a few years ago. Had to buy a gallon or so.

I an used to stripping paint from plastic whilst model making, usually when I have made an arse of something.

What I use is nail Polish remover, brake or clutch cleaner, or brake fluid, all work and, will not damage the plastic. Lacquer thinner wil also work if rubbed in and wiped off.

Good luck l

You can still buy Dichloromethane (greater than 0.1% wt content) based paint stripper BUT you have to get a bit creative that you are a professional and are using it in an industrial facility etc....I buy it as Starchem Synstrip Paint Stripper in 5 litre plastic bottles.

I used to work in a (oil refinery) mineral lubricant oil plant, and we used Dichloroethane mixed with Methylenedichloride (DI-ME solvent) to remove parafin waxes from the baseoils to prevent them from 'setting' at low temperature......even walking through the unit gave a heady smell of solvent....we used to wash oven trays, bring in things to paint strip (all in the safety of a lab fume cupboard & gloves obviously). Happy days before H&S banned all the wonderfully useful chemicals available.
